April Fools Day
Today may be April Fools Day, but this is no joke. It's the start of something new--a place for news about Portuguese Bend. The Board of Directors does not want news on the official PBCA web site, so the news is moving over here. These are interesting times in Portuguese Bend, but the local newspapers don't seem to care about us very much. I guess they think we're too small to bother with. But we have all sorts of newsworthy things going on here: lawsuits and development and mudslides and fires and overflowing sewers. We have births, deaths, residents moving in and moving out...and interesting people doing all sorts of creative things: painting, writing, crafting. All of that is news. Everything is news: new jobs, new babies, new neighbors. if you've sold a painting, published a book, cooked a wonderful casserole, or need some help, and you want others to know about it, send me an email (leetwid@yahoo.com) or leave a comment, and I'll try to spread the word.

The truth would be nice to hear. Under Kelly Richardson's advise to the Board, the PBCA official website should be factual info with no personal opinions or comments. If the person maintaining the PBCA official website is not a Board Member and covered under the insurance policy it is a liability issue for the Board. It has nothing to do with caring about the residents as stated above. It's a legal issue. One person's view of the Hood wins. Factual info for residents looses. Unprofessional attitude and behavior.
ReplyDeleteThe truth would be refreshing. The official PBCA website, which was done very nicely, was maintained by someone other than a Board Member who is not covered by the PBCA insurance policy. Kelly Richardson advised the Board to have Leanne get approval first before she posted information because of liability issues to the Board. What is difficult about the approval issue. The website is a factual info site with no personal comments or opinionsaccording to the attorney. The site was not intended to be a newspaper. In talking with many residents in the past months very few knew has chosen not to maintain the site now since there was a website. I'm curious to why Leanne does not want to get approval from the Board before posting.
ReplyDeleteA news site, paper, or journalistic endeavour of any sort, seeks to report the story to the people without input or censorship from the government. The purpose of any news source is to provide a pipeline of information, as factual as it can be at the time of writing, to the citizenry. If the LA Times had to get the City Council or the CA Legislature to approve its stories before publishing, it would likely fold. It's what we call Freedom of the Press, and it's one of the few tenets upon which this nation was founded. That's why she didn't want to be forced to get board approval before posting news about the community.
ReplyDeleteOur founding fathers wanted citizens to have access to the truth, not just what the governors wanted them to hear. Factual info for residents wins. Angry and childish residents who don't want certain information made public lose. Sorry.
